How do I know when it is done? Terminal says, "Copying installer files to disk..."

We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System

Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.

#2) Think before you type.

To continue we need to erase the disk at /Volumes/ELCAPITAN.

This looks like something that is specific to your site/business/employer. You probably need to ask your System Administrator what this all means.

I can make the assumption with Terminal, as soon as you get back to your $ prompt, whatever was executing will be complete.

If you are installing OS X I would simply rely on the installer as all the necessary steps are integrated with the package.
